Common Uses for Tin Zinc Solders
When we look at the common uses for zinc solder, they typically involve soldering metals and components that cannot be exposed to a high level of heat and where precision and delicacy are required in order to complete the job.
Soldering Aluminum to Aluminum or Copper to Copper
Tin Zinc solders can be effectively used to solder aluminum and copper. One of the ways to do that is with MAB rod, which has a melting point of 720 degrees Fahrenheit (382C). We recommend using an oxygen and gas fuel torch with a neutral or reducing flame for large projects and propane torches for smaller projects when soldering with MAB rod. It’s important to note that flux is not needed with MAB rod.
Repairing Electronic Components, Including Capacitors
Electronic components and capacitors require a light touch and precision work. For this detailed work, we typically recommend tin zinc soldering wire or spray wire, which has a low melting point and helps to avoid heat damage, including the deformation of sensitive components, especially where capacitors are concerned.

Lower melting alloys are perfect for applications that require precision and delicacy. Precision and delicacy are primarily achieve using MAB rod. This is because preparation involves heating the surfaces that are to be joined instead of the rod. Once the surfaces reach the desired temperature, the MAB rod is scratched along the surface in order to deposit the liquid soldering metal.
