Product Overview

67/33 Copper Zirconium is a copper-zirconium master alloy with a nominal composition of 67% Cu and 33% Zr. Zirconium acts as a grain refiner and deoxidizer in copper alloys producing finer as-cast microstructures that improve mechanical properties — particularly elongation, fatigue strength, and work hardening response — while preserving the high electrical conductivity that is the defining property of copper alloys for electrical applications. This master alloy is used for zirconium additions to copper, beryllium copper, chrome copper, and other precipitation-hardening copper alloy systems where grain refinement of the as-cast structure improves response to subsequent age hardening treatments. The 67/33 composition provides a copper-rich matrix that promotes dissolution in copper alloy heats while delivering a high concentration of zirconium per addition unit. Available in 1 inch x 6 inch x 12 inch broken slabs and 5 gram and down pieces to serve both production foundry and precision small-scale addition requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common technical inquiries regarding 67/33 Copper Zirconium
Zirconium copper alloys are specified for resistance welding electrodes, electrical contact springs, lead frames, and high-speed rail current collectors where the combination of elevated strength, high electrical conductivity (typically 80-90% IACS after aging), and thermal stability at elevated temperatures is required. Zirconium is preferred over beryllium for many of these applications because it avoids beryllium toxicity concerns and over chromium because it achieves similar strength levels with better conductivity retention.
The broken slab form serves production foundry operations making large copper alloy heats where total zirconium additions of several grams to tens of grams are required. The 5 gram and down piece form serves laboratory, research, and precision small-batch alloy production where very small accurately weighed zirconium additions are needed — for example when making test quantities of zirconium-bearing copper alloys for property evaluation. The fine piece size dissolves faster and allows more precise charge measurement than broken slab.
Zirconium enters copper in solid solution during casting or solution annealing and precipitates as Zr2Cu during subsequent aging at 700-900F. The fine uniformly distributed precipitate particles impede dislocation motion significantly increasing hardness and tensile strength. The aging response is maximized when the prior solution anneal fully dissolves the zirconium into solution and the quench is rapid enough to suppress premature precipitation. Grain refinement from zirconium also provides more uniform precipitation distribution during aging.
